Do you have course materials to share with students? Do you want an easy way to collect assignments and manage grades? Would you like your students to share and critique ideas online, collaborate on projects, and review each other’s work?

If you answered yes to any of the above, consider using Moodle for your courses. Moodle is a widely used open-source learning management system. Because all your students are automatically enrolled in the Moodle system, Moodle provides an easy way to get information to your students—and only your students. However, you can easily open the information to others in the Haverford/Bryn Mawr.

Haverford’s Moodle system varies a bit from other institutions, including the Moodle installations at Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore. This Creating Courses with Moodle series introduces you to the specifics of using Moodle for courses at Haverford, although much of the information will be applicable to Moodle installations at other schools too. Likewise, you can find lots of great information about Moodle from the Moodle.org website and the many other institutions that use the Moodle system.

This Creating Courses series has several components, which are best understood when read in order:

  1. Overview
  2. What’s in a Course Shell?
  3. Course Design And Settings
  4. Adding Course Content
  5. Making your Course Visible to Students — warning, you need to take action for this
  6. Understanding Course Enrollments
  7. Communicate with Your Students

This series is written for instructors and others that are building courses. For general information about using Moodle at Haverford, including log on instructions, see Moodle Basics.
